Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping in and taking the time to help me out with D&D 5e! I REALLY appreciate it. I've played 2, 3.5, and 4 (the first two in Baldur's Gate though...), but 5e is entirely new to me and I barely understood the actual rules before 5e came along...
I have two questions that Twitter's 140 characters is not really helping me ask completely--so I decided to post them here and hopefully get some help/answers via Twitter (or Facebook, if you prefer). You can reference the number of the question in your reply and I’ll know what you’re helping me out with.
And I am undecided. (which brings me to my next question)
2.) Which class is best for me?
Thank you all of you who have helped me narrow down choices (and form our party so far and I'll post details and all the juicy bits after our next Thursday session when characters are finalized). I am the last one to choose and I am torn between a bard, arcane trickster, arcane trickster/wizard multi-classed, or Eldritch Knight/Wizard multi-classed.
What I want: someone not useless in battle, but more importantly, someone with fantastic funness outside of combat. (aka, utility). My playstyle is "clever"--I enjoy being creative with my abilities/personality/equipment to do unique and different things. (For example: In 4e, I played a Warlock who had a lot of teleportation and a bag of holding. I liked to teleport through closed windows with someone stuffed in my bag, mill about where I wasn't allowed, steal if I so chose, Pass Wall if I got caught or in trouble, etc... One of the last things I did in that campaign was get captured by the enemy and then Pass Wall when they left me alone. Previously, I had teleported through the window of a shop and stole some overpriced merchandise--stuffing it into my bag). I like spells that let me change the NPCs/situations/world to do “more.” I like to teleport through closed windows and pass through walls when I get caught. I like bags of holding where you can stuff people inside. I like to charm the unreasonable NPC. I wouldn’t mind helping to lighten the pockets of a laden nobleman. I like to get in and out of trouble and expand my options--but it doesn't have to be stealing. Etc…
Reasons for the previous class considerations:
I am going to be a drow. I'm set on that.
Bardshave always seemed kinda… “meh” to me—not strong enough or useful enough to really be like “OH BOY I WANT TO BE A BARD…!”—but they do seem to have some great versatility in the spell casting world this time around—allowing me to customize a full utility spell set while not being COMPLETELY useless in battle (albeit, close?). I was figuring College of Lore as opposed to Valor just because you get more spells in College of Lore. I figure I could be a utility powerhouse this way (as well as extremely charismatic). Thoughts?
Arcane Tricksters seemed useful in battle and capable of a few utility spells. I wonder if this is enough to really play “utility” outside of combat though—I’m not so interested in utility IN combat as I am to what potential I hold OUTSIDE of combat.
You know. This potential.
Arcane Trickster/Wizard multiclass seemed like a possible compromise to the “wanting to be useful in battle while still having enough utility.” A lot of people seemed to think I should go Arcane Trickster for three levels, wizard for two, and then back and forth as I wish from there. Do you think this will give me my goal of being semi-useful in battle while being about to “do a great variety of utility” outside of battle?
Breaking and entering. You're doing it right.
Eldritch Knight/Wizard multiclass seemed like something I would love. In Baldur’s Gate (aka, D&D 3.5), I LOVED the fighter/mage. It was far and beyond my favorite class. If I did Eldritch Knight/Wizard and we start at level 5, I could do three levels in Eldritch and 2 in Wizard—thus tanking/fighting (usefully?) in battle while opening the door to utility outside of battle. However: Is this /enough/ utility outside of battle, can I survive battle, and can I get enough spells multiclassing this way for there to “be a point”?
Over all, I'm not set on any one class, but I could use some experience voices to point me in the right direction! Thanks a million!
